Debt consolidation with FIFO, overtime or variable income

If income changes with rosters, overtime or contracts, explain both the amount and its pattern. A debt-consolidation plan should be affordable in an ordinary quieter period, not just after your highest payslip.

Break the payslip into parts

Identify base income, overtime, allowances, bonuses and any reimbursements. Write down how often each appears and whether you expect it to continue. Bring several payslips or an income summary showing the pattern rather than selecting only the best one. Ask what portion can be considered for the proposed assessment.

Map the timing mismatch

If your pay cycle and repayment dates do not line up, draw a simple calendar. Mark mortgage, card, car and personal-loan payments. Add the dates wages arrive. This can show whether part of the pressure comes from timing rather than total cost, and whether changing payment dates might help alongside or instead of refinancing.

Use a quieter-month budget

Set out the living expenses and commitments you must meet when overtime drops. Include travel, family costs and irregular bills. Ask for the proposed repayment to be tested against that budget. Keep any expected pay rise separate from income you already receive.

Prepare a practical contact plan

For shift work or FIFO rosters, tell us when you can safely take a phone call and how you prefer to receive document requests. Agree who will respond to time-sensitive lender questions if you are away. This is an administration plan, not a shortcut around the assessment.

What to prepare

  • Income history showing an ordinary range of pay.
  • Employment and roster information.
  • A calendar of income and repayments.
  • A budget that does not rely on maximum overtime.

Your questions answered

Will all overtime count?

Ask how the particular lender treats it. Do not assume the full amount will be accepted.

Does FIFO work automatically mean I qualify?

No. The complete income, expense, debt and property position still needs assessment.

Can I arrange the call around my roster?

Include suitable contact times in your request so the conversation can be arranged around your work.
